Our Commitment

Chelmsford Health Centre, operated by Rainbow Diagnostics Ltd, is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040 for all scopes of greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3).

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Our baseline emissions assessment incorporates data from our direct operations at Chelmsford Health Centre and the wider operations of Rainbow Diagnostics. The Centre includes urgent care, GP services, specialist outpatient clinics, diagnostics (X-ray, ultrasound, echocardiography), minor procedures, and administrative functions.

Scope 1 (Direct emissions)

Heating, on-site energy use, clinical waste disposal, company vehicles.

Scope 2 (Indirect emissions)

Purchased electricity for facilities.

Scope 3 (Supply chain & other)

Consumables, procurement, business travel, patient/staff commuting, outsourced diagnostics, waste disposal, digital services.

Methodology: Chelmsford Health Centre will use the NHS Carbon Footprint Plus methodology to align measurement and reporting with NHS sustainability requirements.

Completed Carbon Reduction Measures

The following measures have already been completed or implemented:

Reduced paper usage through digital patient records and appointment systems
Restricted use of disposable gloves and plastics to essential clinical activity
Banned non-essential plastic consumables such as falcon tubes for transport
Implemented waste segregation and recycling processes (clinical vs. non-clinical)
Administrative staff encouraged to work from home, reducing commuting emissions
Participation in supplier take-back schemes

Planned Carbon Reduction Measures

Future initiatives include:

Sustainable Procurement

Prioritising suppliers within 25 miles, bulk purchasing, and sourcing ISO14001-compliant consumables

Green Transport

Expanding electric/hybrid vehicle use and incentivising staff/public transport use

Energy Efficiency

LED lighting, motion sensors, renewable energy supply contracts

Waste Reduction

Aim to recycle at least 70% of waste; reduce landfill contribution to under 5% by 2027

Sustainable Clinical Pathways

Increased use of telehealth consultations to reduce patient travel emissions

Staff Training

Sustainability embedded into induction
