Understanding ADHD

Understanding ADHD: Adults & Children

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting:

  • Attention and concentration
  • Impulse control
  • Activity level and self-regulation

It frequently continues from childhood into adult life and often co-exists with other conditions such as anxiety, depression or autism.

Adult ADHD – Common Features

Adults with ADHD may experience:

Difficulty sustaining focus on work tasks or conversations
Chronic disorganisation, poor time-keeping, missed deadlines
Starting many projects but struggling to complete them
Restlessness or "internal hyperactivity"
Impulsive decisions or emotional "overreactions"
Long-standing problems with study, work and relationships

These issues are often lifelong but may only be recognised in adulthood, especially in high-achieving or masking individuals.

Medication Options

ADHD Medication

Depending on a person's symptoms, medication could be recommended to help manage ADHD symptoms. There are mainly two types of medications used in ADHD – stimulants and non-stimulants.

Methylphenidate

Stimulant

Commonly used medication that increases activity in the part of the brain that controls attention and behaviour.

Dexamfetamine

Stimulant

Works in a similar way to methylphenidate and is taken as a tablet once or twice a day.

Lisdexamfetamine

Stimulant

Used in children over the age of 6, and can even be taken into adulthood for continued symptom management.

Atomoxetine

Non-Stimulant

A selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) that helps concentration and controls impulses.

Guanfacine

Non-Stimulant

Improves attention and reduces blood pressure. Can be used in children and teenagers.

How they work: Both types of medications work by increasing dopamine levels in the frontal lobes of the brain, which helps improve focus, attention, and impulse control.
